Datum CP have been in the print industry for ten years, providing services for companies ranging from AOL to Kickers. This week Datum CP’s new website goes live with a complete integration of our web-2-print widget, designthing!
Director of Datum CP, Scott Pearce, commented on the need within the industry for a low cost, simple design tool in the current economic climate,
‘We’ve been looking into this area for the last 6 or 7 years, but everything we’ve looked at has been over complicated and too expensive. designthing enables our non professional customers to design and submit us print ready artwork. It sends us a fully compliant PDF ready to print from. Standardising this important part of our revenue stream allows us to maximize our profit and minimise the hassle of dealing with labour intensive, short run clients. ’
We were extremely pleased that Scott found designthing to be so useful. You can see how datum are using designthing at www.datumcp.com.

Ian Millington, Andy Wood and I started Cargo Cult Solutions Ltd in April 2008 after I completed my masters in artificial intelligence in 2007. We set out to create something special, a unique product for then next generation of devices and coming internet paradigm. Unfortunately, the sub-prime crisis dramatically changed the investment landscape for untested products, so we thought about a change of tack.
When Ian, Andy and I got together at the beginning of this year, we set out to develop a product that would create value for other companies of a similar size to us. Ian has had considerable experience with the print industry, having released a number of academic and scientific titles (see Ian’s titles), and also having already developed a number of technologies for solving printing issues.
So it seemed natural to us to take the proprietary technology platform that we’d spend the previous year building, agon, and modify it for use by small to medium sized businesses in a highly competitive market. With Ian’s deep insight into the kinds of problems faced by SME printers, designthing was conceived, and in february we both began working to design a product that would be appealing to this market.
Its been a really exciting 6 months. We hope you like designthing, and if you dont, please tell us why. Email me directly at benjamin@getdesignthing.com.
